Day of Departure we were up way before the crack of dawn (4:30 am) to drive to the airport. We had a non-stop flight from San Francisco to Kahului, Maui.
Getting up this early did have its advantages - we landed in Maui at 11:15 am local time.
As always, we planned out our trip. We had purchased a resort package through Costco that included a rental car, our resort room, and a full breakfast each day. So the plan was to get picnic stuff at the local Costco for lunches, and then eat out one meal a day. Except for one night, we planned to eat at local food, hole-in-the-wall spots that would not break the bank. We had spent time reading about places like this to eat, and had a list that we had created, that grouped these spots by area on the island.
Getting our rental car was very smooth and since we were starved, we headed to a nearby food truck we really wanted to try.

This food truck is always parked on the side of Kahului Beach Road, right near the Kahului boat ramp. This was no more than 10 minutes from the airport.
As you can see, we weren't the only ones ordering some shrimp. Each dish was made to order, and so we did end up waiting about 25 minutes for our plate. I was still in my long jeans from the flight: note to self, change into Hawaii weather appropriate clothes in the airport bathroom.
We sat on the grass behind the truck and shared a shrimp plate. We chose the Spicy Pineapple. For $13 you get 12 saucy shrimp over shredded cabbage, 1 scoop of rice, and a scoop of crab macaroni salad. Perfect for sharing.
The shrimp were not shelled, so make sure you get lots of napkins. The sauce was very good and had pineapple chunks and a great balance between spicy and sweet. Licking fingers is most appropriate. After we ate the shrimp we mixed the remaining rice into the sauce and ate it up too.
Off to Costco. I was surprised to see that the prices were pretty much what they are at my local Costco back in Northern California. We picked up lunch stuff, snacks, water, drinks and some wine. Being in the west, we recognized many of the wine labels and like I said, the prices were the same as at home.

We started the drive around the west side of Maui to our resort, which was on Ka'anapali Beach. This is about 45 minutes from Kahului. We checked in, parked, and then took 3 trips to get the luggage and all the Costco stuff into the room. We did have a partial ocean front room, so it was a little bit of a walk from the parking area to our room.
One tradition we have made in our travels is to bring our youngest daughter's friend Dolly with us on vacation. I always snap a photo of her at some point and send it to the kids.

We packed some drinks into a beach bag we had brought with us, packed in beach towels (that we brought too), drinks, and headed down to the beach to sit for a while.
It was a beautiful day, and the view was amazing. I will tell you, one of the most relaxing things in the world is to sit on the beach and listen to the waves. We did wade for a bit and took a couple of walks too. Ka'anapali Beach is over a mile long and we were at the north end, right near Black Rock.
At times the clouds were covering the sun and the view was heavenly.
It was getting later so we walked, just a few feet, into our resort and got ready for dinner. We had decided to try Leilani's, a place one resort down that was in the Whaler's Village. So you know, Whaler's Village is a shopping area. Shopping is SO not my thing, so we only walked into it one day to get some pineapple and chocolate covered macadamia nuts at ABC Stores.
To get anywhere on Ka'anapali Beach you walk down the beach walkway, that runs all they way down, in front of all the resorts.
Leilani's is right in the front, with great views of the beach. There are two different dining rooms to eat at. The main one, the one upstairs, is the more expensive spot. We ate at Leilani's On The Beach, which has a more casual fare.

And this being our first evening in Maui, I got myself a Mai Tai.

This was good, but not the best. I don't usually add spice to dishes, but I needed to add something to this to give it more of a kick. They did have hot sauce at the table.
We also split an order of fish tacos. Our server was very nice and had it split for us on two plates.
The fish was fresh and had a good taste, but again I felt like it was missing a flavor. I did like the guacamole that accompanied the taco.
After dinner we walked down the beach for a while.
The sunset was amazing.
We headed back to our hotel for some wine and snacks. We slept with our balcony door open, to remind us of where we were.
