No breakfast photo today! I'm not sure why I forgot to take it.
We wanted to get out and snorkel at Black Rock early so we were out there by 9 am. This was the best part of staying at Ka'anapali.....we literally walked out of our hotel and there was Black Rock.
It was a little cold in the water, but swimming warms you up.
On the swim out to Black Rock we saw this guy hanging out.
It was still early enough that there weren't too many snorkelers here.
My Sweetie, diving down.
There were actually quite a few fish, especially right up against the rocks.
This was a great snorkeling spot, and as we found out later in the day, especially in the morning.
Both of us diving down to get a close look at the marine life.
There were lots of canyons like this we could swim through.
People have died here, so we are very cautious when we swim. We always swim together, and whenever we swim down into canyons, we have already scoped it out and know we won't get trapped. There are lots of crevices and hidden caves and you must be cautious whenever you snorkel. We also make sure we don't get too close to the rocks.
There are lots of sea urchins around too - stepping on one of them would not be fun. We make sure to not touch the coral at all, if fact we don't like to come near the bottom with our flippers. This can kick up sand and decrease visibility.
I so love diving down to explore.
As we were headed back to shore we saw these guys.
They let us swim right up close to them.
We went back and sat of the beach for a while. I absolutely love sitting on the beach, having good conversations, and listening to the waves.
For lunch we decided to go into the next town over, to Lahaina, and go to Foodland. This is a grocery store, but is supposed to have a great deli. We got some maki, seaweed salad, and poke and headed to Baby Beach, right in town.
Nom nom nom.
The salad and maki were good but the poke did have some fatty spots. The poke at Eskimo Candy in Kihei was still the best.
As we were sitting and watching, we saw a cruise ship crossing in front of us.
After this we headed back to Ka'anapali and to Black Rock. Even though we knew that snorkeling was not as ideal in the afternoon we thought we would try and see.
There were turtles out there but as you can see, it was getting a little more rough and murky.
This is where I could see that people could get into trouble out here. You are focused on the turtles, following and swimming with them, when all of a sudden you have followed them right into a crevice or too close to the shore.
We did get a couple of neat shots with the turtles though.
We were super careful and never felt in danger out here. This afternoon we also felt the current had picked up so we did not go around the point like we had in the morning, but swam back down south and away from the point.
There was still lots to see in this area.
This guy was friendly and swam with us for a while.
After about 45 minutes of snorkeling, we went and sat on the beach. We had the whole afternoon ahead of us. Basically we would swim with the waves, dry off and have a drink, get warm again, and go back in to swim. Over and over.
Our last dinner in Maui and we had decided to stay close and eat in Lahaina at Aloha Mixed Plate. This was just a short 10 minute drive from the hotel.
While we were waiting for our table we walked out to the beach and watched the sun set.
Last night in Maui!
We started with Mai Tai's. The seating was outside and right next to the beach so we could hear the waves crashing all through dinner.
I got the Loco Moco. This is a classic Hawaiian dish and is a scoop of rice, a hamburger patty smothered in brown gravy, fried eggs on top and a scoop of macaroni salad on the side. It was very tasty.
My Sweetie got the mixed plate. This one came with chicken katsu, beef teriyaki, and salmon.
The end to a lovely day.
